Résumé :
Trois expéditions Monoxylon (I-III) ont été entreprises jusqu’à ce jour : en 1995, en 1998 et en 2019. Ces projets d’archéologie expérimentale visaient à reconstruire et à faire naviguer un type de bateau préhistorique appelé monoxylon (ou logboat) ; une embarcation dont le principal élément de conception nautique est un seul tronc d’arbre évidé. L’objectif de ces trois expéditions était de vérifier dans la pratique les capacités nautiques de ce type de bateau en mer et sa contribution à la propagation des premières populations agricoles à travers la Méditerranée, en enrichissant ainsi nos connaissances et compréhension quant à la manière dont ces premiers voyages préhistoriques en mer auraient pu être entrepris. Depuis début avril 2022, un groupe de plus de 20 membres / bénévoles de la future expédition, Monoxylon IV, ont commencé à construire un nouveau bateau. Depuis septembre 2022, les travaux sont quasi terminés, et le bateau pourra naviguer sur mer à la fin de ce mois. L’objectif de la présente contribution est d’expliquer les motifs justifiant la nécessité de cette récente expédition Monoxylon IV.
Abstract:
To date, three Monoxylon Expeditions (I-III) have been undertaken in 1995, 1998, and 2019 respectively. These experimental archaeology projects aimed at reconstructing and navigating a prehistoric boat type called monoxylon (or logboat); a vessel whose principal nautical design element is a single hollowed-out tree trunk. The objective of all these three expeditions has been to practically verify the nautical capabilities of this type of boat at sea and its contribution to the spreading of early agricultural populations through the Mediterranean advancing our knowledge and understanding of the way in which these early prehistoric sea voyages may have been undertaken. Since early April 2022 a group of more than 20 volunteer members of the future expedition, Monoxylon IV, started to build a new boat, while since September 2022, the work is nearly finished and the vessel is to be put to the test on the water at the end of that month. The aim of the present contribution is to explain the reasons behind the need of this latest Monoxylon IV Expedition.
